Young Toni, whose mother tries to persuade him to take over the family's watermill, has other things on his mind: he wants to become a singer. After all, he is already performing in his home village in the Altmühltal, which doesn't earn him any money, but does win him the affection of pretty Elsie. When Toni's mother finally realizes that her son is serious about his career aspirations, she gives him her blessing. Together with his friend Edi, who also writes the lyrics for his songs, Toni wants to try his luck in the theater. However, success is a long time coming, but Toni's landlady gets them a job at the theater - as stagehands. Edi and Toni, on the other hand, pretend to their families that they have become successful musicians. When Toni's mother comes to town to see her son on stage, the whole scam is exposed...
