In 2020, Leipzig-based painter Michael Triegel received an extraordinary commission: to redesign the destroyed central panel of the Altar of the Virgin Mary in Naumburg Cathedral. Nearly 500 years earlier, the original by Lucas Cranach had fallen victim to iconoclasm, leaving only the side panels intact. Because no records exist of the original depiction of the Virgin Mary with the Child, Triegel must create an entirely new painting—in keeping with Cranach’s style. It is his largest work to date, and its creation spans two years. But shortly after its completion, the UNESCO expert committee expresses concerns about the altar.
